ICE ICE Baby
Yey! Another supersweet release from the Microsoft Research department for all photography adepts worldwide! Microsoft ICE is live! So, what’s in the bag? ICE is the Image Composite Editor and it’s an advanced panoramic image stitcher. You shoot a set of overlapping photographs of a scene from a single location, and Image Composite Editor creates a high-resolution panorama incorporating all your images at full resolution. Then you can save your stitched panorama in a wide variety of formats, from common formats like JPEG and TIFF to multi-resolution tiled formats like HD View and Silverlight Deep Zoom. Here’s your chance to create stunning 360° panoramas and impressive sceneries. If you try this out, upload them to your public skydrive folder and feel free to share them with me. It’s always welcome to include in some demos.
Features
- State-of-the-art stitching algorithms
- Advanced orientation adjustment view
- Exposure blending
- Output in many formats:
- HD View
Silverlight Deep Zoom
TIFF, JPEG, PNG, and more
I’ve been running the beta for quite some time already and I’ve tried a variety of scenes. Unfortunately there was no backup of the end result and the IT guys accidentally swiped my laptop while I was on vacation. But lucky me, I’ve got all the pictures backed-up at home and I’ll be testing this baby this weekend and update this post with the results. :)

The ICE release is to be announced at the Photokina fair in Cologne (Germany), the world’s largest digital imaging trade show! You can find Microsoft Research at Hall 4.1, Aisle G, Stand 031.

There seems to be no way to control its dropping of images. I would like to be able to force it to use all images, showing it where they go if necessary, and perhaps “hinting” by dragging matching tiles like Canon’s PhotoStich does.
When this works, it’s beautiful, but it’s been pretty hit-and-miss for me.

Good suggestion. I’ll inform the team about this. Did you like the overall look and feel of the interface and the quality of the results?
